So who is the designer behind the très chic collection?
Get to know Kym Ellery.
Who is Kym Ellery?
I am the Creative Director of fashion brand Ellery. I’m proud to be Australian born and now reside in Paris, France. I have a strong love for art, fashion, photography, interior design and architecture which was handed down to me from my mother who is a very talented textile artist. She taught me how to sew which led me to where I am today.
Tell us a little bit about the collaboration process and how you brought the two brand identities together?
The collection was designed in our studio in Paris working closely with the Witchery team in Australia. The pieces were designed especially thinking about the needs and wants of the stylish Antipodean. It was important for us to represent both DNA of the two brands’, so our starting point was to research both the Ellery and Witchery identities and archives. Next, we observed the different ways that the aesthetic could cross over. From there we started to sketch ideas, research key fabrics, details and there were numerous cross continental digital design meetings. The process felt very organic and we feel the end result really captures both worlds.
Tell us about the Witchery X Ellery capsule collection and inspiration behind the range?
I was inspired by the idea of building the perfect wardrobe. One that is effortless, timeless, comfortable and stylish. The collection was designed in Paris, and we referenced both the Ellery and Witchery archive to create a wardrobe of forever pieces. It’s really important to me that in fashion there is a focus on quality and buying investment pieces.
What signature Ellery details can fashion lovers expect to see in the Witchery collaboration?
We wanted to focus on presenting a true Ellery silhouette so have focused on voluminous sleeves, flared pants, corsetry details, ombre prints, shirting with subtle twists and gathered seams. We also worked with fabrics such as classic crepes, linen blends, fringing and embroidery detail. It’s a wardrobe for a modern person and each piece speaks volumes.

Standouts from the collection and why?
It is hard for me to choose just one favourite, I just love them all! I adore the linen blend voluminous sleeve shirt in white. It’s such a beautiful piece. You can wear it open in summer with beautiful lingerie underneath or wear it over a turtleneck in winter and pair it back with something more tough such as a black skirt or black pants, as we did in the campaign. I also love the crepe pants with top stitched oval external pockets and side leg splits. For me this is such a forever piece and they work so well casually styled back in the evening with our soft corset tops. I also love the jewellery. I love the idea of wearing the pieces mismatching or stacked together. Especially the natural baroque pearl hook earring paired with the chain drop earrings, j’adore.
How do you hope the collection makes its wearer feel?
I believe that fashion is a powerful language and that it can make you feel any way that you want it to. I hope through this collection whoever wears it feels strong yet elegant and has the confidence to achieve what they would like to in their day or event in their life. Our lives can be so multifaceted and demanding so my job as a designer is to create collections that not only bring you functionality but also beauty and joy.
What do you love most about working in the fashion industry? How has the industry evolved since you entered?
I love to create beautiful objects and the cool thing about fashion is that you get to wear these objects which you create. This concept is so exciting to me. I think I have one of the most rewarding jobs in the world, to be able to create a concept and then execute it into a physical thing, a garment that can then become part of someone’s life. Life can be so hard and dull, especially lately. If a person can put on a gown and feel good about themselves then I consider my job a job well done.
What does your day-to-day involve?
I am very blessed to live in the beautiful city of Paris. I loved growing up in sunny Perth and Australia wil forever be my home, but I am deeply enjoying the cultural satisfaction that comes with living in an European city. It has been challenging to learn a new language to then fully engage in the culture so my day to day involved struggling with French when speaking to locals, walking to the Ellery studio to work on creating pieces with the team, visiting some of the world’s best art galleries on the weekend and getting inspired for the next collection.
What is next for Ellery?
This year we are excited to launch some new products to enhance the world of Ellery. We will continue to explore the digital world as well as collectable design which I am really excited about. So stay tuned and watch this space.
